Is there a stainless steel welding machine that doesn't use real gas? This is a question that many people wonder when looking for solutions for stainless steel welding in conditions where protective gas cannot be used. Normally, to achieve beautiful, bright white stainless steel welds, a Tig welding machine using Argon gas is the top choice. But if this type of machine cannot be used, is there an alternative?  

The answer is Yes, but the results will not be as expected. You can try methods such as using a stick welding machine with stainless steel welding rods or using a Tig welding machine with stainless steel welding rods. However, the weld quality will not be comparable to when using a welding machine with protective gas.

In addition, some of you also wonder whether gasless Mig welding machines can weld stainless steel or not. The answer is no. This type of machine is only suitable for welding iron and steel. If you want to weld stainless steel, you need to use a Mig welding machine with gas (CO2) combined with a stainless steel welding coil. However, it should be noted that this method only applies to stainless steel with a thickness of 2mm or more and must have protective gas to ensure weld quality.

Welding stainless steel rods with a rod welding machine:

Use stainless steel welding rods and proceed as when welding regular rods. To be effective, it is necessary to choose the welding rod diameter and adjust the welding current to match the thickness of the welded object. You can refer to the following standard calculation formulas:  

- Welding rod diameter: D = S:2+1 (D is the diameter of the welding rod, S is the thickness of the welding workpiece).  

- Welding current intensity: I = S x 40 (S is the thickness of the weld workpiece). 

Weigh:

Welding stainless steel without using gas often causes the weld to become black and requires a lot of re-grinding, wasting time and effort. If grinding too carefully, the weld may become thin, reducing durability. Therefore, this method should only be applied when aesthetics is not an important factor or in cases of force majeure.  

In addition, gasless welding machines are only suitable for welding stainless steel objects with a thickness of 2 - 7mm. If the material is thinner, the high temperature from the arc will easily cause burns or punctures in the weld, affecting quality. 

Weld stainless steel rods with a Tig welding machine 

Instead of using Argon gas, you just need to use a stainless steel welding rod to perform the welding process.  

However, this method should only be applied in force majeure cases, such as when welding and suddenly running out of gas. This is a temporary solution, often made by welders to handle the situation, but is not a recommended option.

Reasons why it should not be applied regularly 

- This method does not guarantee long-term durability for the device. Tig welding guns when operating without protective gas will be easily damaged, leading to having to be replaced, causing costly costs.  

- Weld quality is often unsatisfactory, prone to blackening and loss of aesthetics, not suitable for applications requiring high perfection.  

The steps are as follows: First, remove the soldering iron and remove the soldering iron from the machine. Then, reinstall the soldering iron as usual and insert the stainless steel welding rod to start welding. This method helps you use the Tig welding machine in the absence of protective gas.  

However, the weld result will not be of high quality. Welds often become black, unsightly and require additional processing. You can grind to clean the weld, but this process is quite laborious and time consuming. Additionally, if you want to process it quickly, you can use a stainless steel bleaching machine, but this method will incur significant additional costs.
